I've been putting this post off for a while because so much happened on our last day in DC and writing about it has seemed exhausting. But today is the day! Kenny gets to email every Sunday, so I try to post blogs each week so he can see pictures of our family.
Anyway, we checked out of our hotel Thursday morning. Once we were all packed up, we headed out to the car and experienced something very unusual and new. The boys and I were walking down the hallway to our car and as we turned the corner a man jumped up from the ground next to a trash can. He immediately and quickly walked away from us. It was startling. Then we realized why. The boys immediately started saying "Eww. It smells like poop." And sure enough, there was a huge pile of poop on the ground. The man had pooped on the ground in the middle of a hotel hallway. It was outside, but it was still in the middle of a hotel. It wasn't a bush or a tree... It was a concrete hallway. Matthew and Aaron absolutely couldn't believe it. They saw it and kept saying "GROSS! Mom! LOOK!" I was really disturbed by the whole situation. Chris saw it as we walked by and we talked about it in the car on the way to the city. I felt so bad for that man.
We drove to the National Zoo that morning. Since it's part of the Smithsonian museums in DC, it's free! We had to pay for parking, but the zoo didn't cost us a penny. We met up with an old friend of mine from Kingman who now lives in Virginia with his wife and 2 daughters. We had a great time!
Another incident happened with bodily fluids, though. The gorilla in the chamber with the one you see below was acting a little strange. It was sitting right by the window/glass while picking through and eating what looked like a gross pile of food on the ground. As we watched it closer (the kids were standing right up against the glass at this point), it vomited. Then proceeded to pick through its vomit and eat the chunks that were left. I seriously was so sick to my stomach by that time from all of the bodily function mishaps we had had.
We left the ape house and Aaron was relieved. He kept complaining about how bad it smelled. Matthew was super excited to see the cheetahs and "daddy" lions.
The reptile/amphibian house was pretty awesome. So much to see!
There was also a little farm section of the zoo.
Matthew and Aaron loved running around and having the freedom to go and look at what they wanted to see. It wasn't crowded at all!
Whenever Aaron got bored with the animals, he took out some toys he brought with him and played on the ground. I love how this kid can entertain himself.
The frogs were so brightly colored. We had a hard time believing that they were real!
It was freezing all day long, but we survived!
We sat and watched the sea otters for quite some time. Matthew, Aaron, and a little friend they met at the zoo were squealing with glee watching the sea otters swim around and around their tank!
They also waited very patiently to get their souvenir penny. We didn't have any $1's, so we had to wait until we found a store that would give us change. They waited almost all day long!
And last but certainly not least were the cheetahs. Matthew was so happy!
